AMLO refuses to wear face masks – After two weeks isolated in the National Palace sick with COVID-19, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, resumed his public activity this Monday (02.08.2021) without modifying his controversial vision of the pandemic: he will continue without wearing a mask and will resume his tours around the country.

On his return to the morning conference, after 15 days of isolation, the President also pointed out that the use of masks will not be mandatory in the country.
The contagion and the two weeks of convalescence of López Obrador, 67, hypertensive and who had a heart attack in 2013, were not enough for the President to give in to his stubborn position of not wearing a mask in public, despite the fact that they recommend it health authorities.
“No (I will use the mask), no. Now, according to what the doctors proposed, I am no longer contagious,” said López Obrador, who since the beginning of the pandemic has questioned the usefulness of the mask without scientific arguments.
A position that contrasts with that established by the Secretary of the Interior, Olga Sánchez Cordero, in charge of giving the press conferences the past two weeks, in which the mask was mandatory.
In addition, López Obrador, who said that he was infected because “it was his turn”, assured that this week he will resume his tours, in which he sometimes hugs and kisses with citizens, and defended not to impose mandatory sanitary measures on the population.
“Why did I get infected? Because I have to work like millions of Mexicans, no way that I stayed locked up all the time, you can’t live locked up; I took care of myself, kept my healthy distance, but it touched me,” he said.
